Having trouble with your Heartland MasterCard debit card at the pump?

If using your Heartland MasterCard debit card for gas, be sure you’re able to do a PIN-based transaction — that is — provide your Personal Identification Number in order to do the transaction. If you don’t use your PIN, or do what’s called a “signature-based transaction,” the gas retailer will put up to a $75 hold on your card — even though you actually purchased much less. They do this to make sure there’s money in your account when their sale posts, usually within 24 to 48 hours. PIN-based transactions settle immediately so the gas retailer can tell you’ll have enough funds to cover the transaction.

This same situation can happen when renting a car or making hotel reservations. Best advice — use your Heartland MasterCard credit card!
